Fr Frank has been lifted greatly by the positive messages and comments received by so many people about the difficult decision to close the church. He is sad that he will not be saying Mass with his parishioners present, but keeping everyone (& himself) safe is his highest priority. It is for this reason also that he is not planning to open the church for private prayer either for the time being.
Please see the amended Newsletter for this week showing the Mass intentions that Fr Frank will pray for at his private Masses, as well as any other Parish news or information.
We will continue to keep connected with you all in as many ways as possible. Watch this space.

The Christmas Carols on Zoom
For those who were unable to join us for our Christmas online Zoom event in December, we can now share a few moments from that afternoon.
In this short clip, Fr Frank gave us all a Christmas blessing at the end of our time together.
And here are our talented musicians wishing us all a Merry Christmas.
Look out for more zoom events soon

CHURCH CLOSURE

Sunday 10th January
A decision has been made to close St Augustine's church for public Mass with immediate effect.
Myself, Fr Jim and the Dean of our area, Fr Gregory Grant, have discussed the situation this weekend and decided that, for the added safety of the priests, deacons, staff, volunteers and parishioners, our churches will close whilst the virus is so prevalent. We will review the situation each couple of weeks and in line with government guidelines.
As it stands at present, Churches are being allowed to make their own decision about remaining open, although in areas where the transmission rates are very high they have already been instructed to close by the Government.
Whilst we are closed, please continue to join Masses online, use the many home resources available for prayer and reflection and please pray for an end to this pandemic and for all the people working on the front line who are most at risk.
I will continue to say Mass every day privately and will pray for all the Mass intentions that have been requested.
Please keep an eye on our website/facebook page for regular news, reflections and updates. As soon as we feel confident to offer Holy Mass once more we will let everyone know.
God Bless you all
Fr Frank

Thank you to Deacon Vincent for your Reflections for Baptism of the Lord, Year B

1
st Reading from the Prophet Isaiah 55: 1-11.
This extract is taken from the final passage in what is called Deutero-Isaiah (Second Isaiah), which covers the period after Cyrus has decreed that the people of Israel can return to their homeland. This Isaiah sees it as their new and better Exodus. It is full of the most beautiful poetry of the Bible. It covers Chapter 40 to 55, so we are reading its final section. Some think it is referring to the cry of the water sellers, others that the hunger is for Wisdom, whichever you choose the message is the same, if you keep close to the Lord and his covenant, all good things will come to you. There is this lovely phrase, “Seek God, and when you find him, call upon him, and when he comes near you,”, there is no doubt that when you call upon God, he will come near to you. We need to remember that God is always listening for us and seeking us out. Sinners need not fear to return to him, “God will abundantly forgive your sins,”.  This passage concludes with the affirmation that God is in charge and will not rest until his will is accomplished.

Responsorial Psalm is taken from one of Isaiah’s Psalms 12: 2-6. This psalm is one of thanksgiving and praise, and it is very noticeable that in this first section of Isaiah we come upon reference to God’s proclamation is also for the Gentiles (Us), and this is a major move in Judaism, to be reaching out to the Gentiles as part of God’s plan.

2nd Reading is from the 1st Letter of St. John 5: 1-9. It is sometimes better to just sink into the atmosphere of this letter, that try to follow his logic. Note his absolute insistence on Jesus humanity, hence the insistence on blood and water, which ensures his humanity and so emphasises exactly what a great gift Jesus, God made man, means for us. For John it is summed up as eternal life. We can only realise what God has done for us when we accept not just Jesus as God; but realise that he is God made truly man for our redemption. It is truly awesome to come face to face with God’s great generosity in bestowing himself to us as a vulnerable human being, so he can show us the way to Him. Let us always be truly grateful for such a gift!!

Holy Gospel according to Mark 1: 7-11. John’s message is presented as being all about Jesus’ superiority, John poses himself as his slave, as dealing with sandals was the task of a slave, also Mark has John telling us that Jesus will baptise with the Holy Spirit, an idea that Mark has yet to explain to us. We must find it puzzling that if Jesus is so superior to John, why does he come to be baptised by John? We see the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descending onto Jesus, and Jesus is publicly affirmed as God’s Son, so it is obviously God’s will that Jesus comes to John. It also shows us how God himself establishes his solidarity with us vulnerable humans in drawing close to God’s mercy. Jesus is there right alongside us in our struggles. He is not a remote God. He is at one with us, so we should not turn away from him in shame; but turn with confidence for him to wash us clean. We see again just how God wants to be at one with us. We can have confidence in his abundant love and care for us. Let us truly rejoice and be glad that he has called us.

God Bless you all, particularly in these difficult times. Deacon Vincent.

Lockdown measures
We are so lucky to be able to continue to keep our Churches open for communal worship whilst we are in this new period of lockdown. We believe this is, in part, a testament to the hard work of churches to bring in very strict safety measures in order to keep the community safe, as well as recognising the importance of keeping God in our lives, now more than ever.
However, we recognise that not everyone will be able to continue coming to Mass, if not well enough, if showing symptoms or needing to isolate, or if now shielding again. Please use the Cathedral online streaming in order to still feel connected to Mass. Please also reach out if you are struggling with loneliness or worries. We can pray for you and try to offer practical support.
For those who are able to attend, we warmly welcome you to Mass at our usual times. Please use our eventbright link to book a place and use the QR code for the track and trace system on arrival.
We must be continue to be extremely careful with social distancing, wearing of masks, and sanitising hands on arrival and on leaving church so please cooperate with these measures and with our stewards' instructions in order to keep everyone safe from this new, more virulent, strain of the virus.
We pray for an end to COVID19 and a return to a safer world.

The Epiphany
Blessings to you all on this Feast day - The Solemnity of the Epiphany.
Just as our Lord revealed Himself to the wise men on the 1st Epiphany, we too can reveal the Lord to other people by our way of life... we can be the light in the world too...
God bless you all - Fr Frank

Thank you, as ever, to Martin le Poidevin for sharing his musical talents with us. The Act of Worship for the Solemnity of the Epiphany.

Thank you all for the extraordinarily generous Christmas Offerings to the priests - even though our numbers of parishioners attending Mass over the Octave of Christmas was very small in comparison to normal years, I received £4,340 in offerings. The generosity shown to me over this difficult year has been very humbling.

In case you missed it...
We said a very fond farewell to Elaine, our Preschool's Manager, back in November and a fond Hello to Kelly who has taken over the running of our wonderful early years facility. Welcome to you Kelly!
Elaine will be greatly missed after giving so many years to the education of our wider parish community's children.
Enjoy your retirement Elaine!

THIS CLIP (CLICK HERE) was sent to Fr Frank by Mgr Gabriel Layden - it is what we will all look like the minute the world is safe again!
Thanks, as ever, for continuing to send us 'the funnies', Mgr Gabriel!

New Year Reflection from The Oblates

There was a man who was fearful and anxious as the New Year began. He prayed and said to God, ‘Give me a light so that I can walk into the New Year without fear.’ There was silence and then he heard God reply, ‘No, I will not give you a light; you take my hand and we will walk into this New Year together. Do not be afraid.’

We pray we will have the courage & humility to place our hand into Gods, so we too can walk into the New Year with God taking each step with us.

Thanks you also for the gorgeous Christmas Wreath, donated kindly by the Hudd family in memory of their mother, Gladys, which decorated the Church so beautifully. And thank you also to Cathy Molloy for giving us a symbolic candle to light by Our Lady's altar as we are unable to offer individual candles for lighting at this time. This candle represents all your prayers.

Christmas Carol
Thank you once again to Martin Le Poidevin.
Martin has shared a beautiful, reflective Carol with us - especially important at this time when we cannot sing carols in Church or in groups, which we are all missing so much.
"The Mystery of Christmas, that the animals should be
the first to see the Christchild cradled peacefully.
O gentle child of Heaven, God's love to us convey.
Salvation has been born for us and lies in the hay.
Salvation has been born for us, born on Christmas Day."

Protecting our world

The Holy See is aiming to reduce its environment impact by embracing renewable energy sources, with the goal of zero emissions by 2050. We must do what we can, and urge others in authority, to protect our beautiful planet.
Bella Harding has shared with us her Laudato Si Chaplet to pray and meditate on, for ourselves and for the safety of Mother Earth. Thank you Bella.

"Just a few words to share a way of saying the chaplet to promote gratefulness at this season when we might be feeling instead all that we lack, freedom, seeing friends and family and so on. I find it great for reminding me of how lucky I am, and how I can be more grateful and careful

So the chaplet is basically
*Praise to you my Lord, through Brother Air*
(repeat as many times as you like, once, 3 or 10)
I use as a chorus each time, as it is easy to remember,
*To you be glory and praise forever*
with the Glory be after each set.
Then
*Praise to you my Lord through Sister Water*
*Praise to you my Lord through Brother Fire*
*Praise to you my Lord through Sister Earth*

Just like the rosary you can use this repetitive prayer to meditate on various related things, for example with Brother Air we can think how wonderful it is to wake up each morning having slept while all the time breathing clean air, that keeps us alive, the bright morning sky, the atmosphere that surrounds the earth making life possible, the winds that sweep away the rain or smoke, the colonies of migrating birds and insects which are all part of the necessary cycle of life, the air currents that create our stable climate and allow us to grow our food

Then I feel sorrow for the way we have polluted the air, burning fossil fuels, so that people are dying of air pollution, like Ella Adykisidebra, and 297 Bristolians a year, mostly in the poorest areas.
*Forgive us my Lord for how we pollute Brother Air.

With Sister Water, we can thank God for the gift of rain that keeps all things growing, for the beauty of rivers and seas and streams, for the joy of quenching our thirst, washing or swimming in water, for all the varieties of water from snow and ice to mist and fog and beautiful clouds and rainbows

We also pollute the water with plastics, pesticides, we cause drought by diverting water and using it in industrial processes so that people nearby have no clean water, or are relocated because of dams
*Forgive us my Lord for how we pollute Sister Water

With Brother Fire, we can thank God for the sun, which rises each day giving us light and warmth in which we can live, bringing about growth, for the uses of fire for heating and cooking and making things

We also misuse fire by burning fossil fuels, causing global warming, by burning ancient forests, by creating weapons such as guns and bombs and using them in war, for creating industrial dependence on cars and planes so that we can’t imagine life without them
*Forgive us Lord for how we misuse Brother Fire

And finally Sister Earth, we can feel the depth of earth beneath our feet and think of the beautiful fragile planet hanging in space, for the land and all the minute life forms that make the earth fruitful, for all the animals birds and fish that are a source of wonder, for the trees and peat bogs that clean our air of carbon and produce the oxygen we need, and often contain medicines that cure us, for the stability of the earth and its coastlines

We have extracted materials, forced growth through chemicals in monoculture, impoverished peoples and taken their land, destroyed the riches of the ancient forests, we have warmed the earth so the glaciers are melting and the sea rising.
*Forgive how we have mistreated the earth our common home"
