Community Kitchen Cupboard (The 'C.K.C.')

NEW FOOD BANK INITIATIVE, together with school & pre-school, our ‘Community Kitchen Cupboard’ is now up & running! (The 'C.K.C.')

(Started July 2024)

This informal, free service is for anyone in our community who might be struggling or just needs a bit of extra help ~ please, just come & help yourselves to a few items from the shelves.

As you can see from the video, come on into the entrance of the church which is open each day (even if the door is shut, please try it, as it is usually unlocked from approx. 8.45am-4pm, or later, on days where there is evening Mass) including during the school holidays.
The Community Kitchen Cupboard is at the end of the entrance area - take a few things for you / your family.

Also, if anyone is in a position to donate tinned & packet items for the CKC please leave items in the box at the bottom of the cupboard for our team to sort out and label.

We would always love some more toilet rolls, tea, coffee, lunchbox snacks such as individual biscuits or dried fruit boxes etc, jars of pasta sauce, tinned or packet desserts (rice pudding / custard etc), tinned meat or fish and sanitary items.
*Keep an eye out for updates on this in the weekly Newsletter*

We hope this will be a useful initiative for our community and we would welcome any helpful feedback and offers to join the team of people checking and re-stocking on a rota basis each day.

“And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

Congratulations to Milly from Willow class for designing the winning logo for The CKC - the new Community Kitchen Cupboard!
... I think it says everything about what the initiative stands for - to surround people with love ❤️ Well done Milly.

A lovely message from Vera and the BristolAid4Ukraine team:

"A heartfelt thank you to you all for supporting yet another successful cake sale in aid of Ukraine. Your kindness, generosity, and continued encouragement mean so much to all of us at BristolAid4Ukraine.

Thanks to your support, the funds raised will go towards purchasing a pickup vehicle that we are hoping to buy very soon. This vehicle will be sent to Ukraine to help soldiers on the front line with vital logistics and evacuation work, where reliable transport can truly save lives.

Every cake bought, every donation given, and every kind word helps make a real difference.
With sincere thanks and appreciation,
BristolAid4Ukraine" 💙💛

The total from the cake sale came to a brilliant £285! Thank you all!

Take a moment, pray with the Pope.

Pray with the Pope is a global initiative of the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network where the Holy Father shares his monthly prayer intention, an invitation to pray and mobilize for the challenges facing humanity and the mission of the Church.

This month's prayer intention is that everyone might have food.
Click below to go to the Vatican website's prayer video.

"Good Father, make us capable of transforming the logic of selfish consumption into a culture of solidarity. May our communities promote concrete gestures: awareness campaigns, food banks,
and a sober and responsible lifestyle.
May no one be excluded from the common table."

Thanks to Deacon Vincent for his Reflections for Pentecost Sunday Year A.

1st Reading from the Acts of the Apostles 2: 1-11.
We see the Spirit in action, with sound and sights (mighty wind, tongues of fire); we are supposed to call to mind Jesus’s baptism at Luke 3: 22 with its own sound and sights (Holy Spirit in bodily form, and the voice from heaven). The fire and mighty wind are symbols of what we shall see in the rest of Acts, as the story of the Holy Spirit unfolds. The violent wind drives the story on throughout the Acts powerfully changing people’s lives and driving the story on. It drives Saul and Peter and the rest of them on the journey to the ends of the earth. Signs and wonders, overcoming opposition and the healings that accompany the gospel. Tongues of fire symbols of the speeches that cover one third of the Acts. Acts is the dramatic illustration of how the fire of the Holy Gospel spread around the Mediterranean world and the wind blew them from Jerusalem to Rome and down to today where we are inspired to hear the Good News. The names of the people listening to the Apostles and disciples preaching make a great circle around the Ancient Near East. The energy of the Spirit arouses opposition hence, “they must be drunk”, but it is too strong to be stopped and drives the story of the Gospel forcibly onward.

Psalm 104(103): 1, 24, 29-31, 34.
A song in praise of God’s creation and is one of the lovliest. That memorable phrase that we so often use. “Send forth your spirit, and they are created, and you renew the face of the earth”. It bubbles over with “Joy” of the Holy Spirit of the Father creator.

2nd Reading from the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians 12: 3-7, 12-13.
One of the many sources of division in the Corinthian Community was evidently the distribution of “spiritual gifts”. The assumption one was a better Christian because one could speak in tongues or prophesy, or work miracles or whatever and the others who don’t are lesser. Paul spends a lot of time of how to resolve this fundamental error. As always Paul takes it back to Jesus. Each gift is from the Holy Spirit not for the benefit of the receiver but for the benefit of the whole Community for whom the gift is to be used. We are all members of the one body in Jesus Christ through the one Spirit given to each of us so there is no national differences or racial differences we are all one in Christ Jesus.

The Holy Gospel according to John 20: 19-23.
The disciples are frightened and shut themselves for fear of the Judeans. There is still a doubt in the Resurrection, and there is no sign of a mission. Jesus appears in the midst of them; he shows them his bodily wounds to convince them this no ghost. John describes the Holy Spirit as the breath of Jesus. It reminds of Genesis where God breaths life into Adam. Our spiritual life is the very breath of God, and this breath gives us the life and strength to undertake the mission that Jesus lays upon us with this Spirit. Sins are forgiven or withheld by the Community, and this is ratified in heaven through the power of this Holy Spirit, which is the very breath of God. This is something to contemplate over this great feast of the birth of Holy Mother Church.

God grace us with the gifts of your Holy Spirit. Deacon Vincent.

Bishop Bosco MacDonald's Pastoral Letter for the Fourth Sunday of Easter
- Bishop Bosco urges Renewed Focus on Priesthood Vocations

Did anyone spot the 'Sun Halo' over the church when coming out of Mass? What a beautiful natural phenomenon!
Thanks to Gloria for the photo.
It reminds us that our precious natural world, and our God, are wonderful!

Parking Reminder: Please use the church car park whenever possible. If parking on the surrounding streets, please ensure you do not block our neighbours' driveways. We had an instance this weekend where a neighbour was unable to leave their home.
We are lucky to have ample parking, compared to other churches, so, please, let's continue to be caring, considerate and responsible in our local community. Thank you for your cooperation!

Update on our Community Kitchen Cupboard (CKC).

We are often asked how it works and how people can help with the CKC - many times people want to pick up an item when shopping but don't know what would best serve the needs of those using it.

Products that are the most helpful to families in need are;
Coffee / tea / tinned vegetables (potatoes, carrots, peas) / baked beans / tuna / tinned ham & 'meatballs in sauce' / pasta sauces / instant noodle / snacks.
We are lucky enough to have generous donors to the box (thank you all), as well as a link with Sainsburys who give us items from the warehouse which are damaged and can't be sold, but in date and perfectly useful to us - we share out these deliveries with a local food bank and the Ukraine Project.

There are about 7 lovely people who volunteer to keep it checked & stocked and help with sorting the new donations, but we would always love more!

Then, anyone who is in need, is invited to take a few items to help out - no questions asked. We only hope that the ones who could benefit most know about it and are confident enough to use it - we spread the word as much as we can. Then, we just 'trust the system' and hope the food is getting to those who really need it.

We are very proud of this initiative as, going by how much is taken from the CKC each week, it is clearly a necessity in our area.

Please pray for those in need or in crisis and for a positive change where schemes such as this would become a thing of the past.

Many thanks to you all. If you have any questions, please make contact.

National Day of Prayer for Survivors of Abuse 2026
On Tuesday 5th May 2026, the Diocese of Clifton will be observing the National Day of Prayer for Survivors and Victims of Abuse. The theme for this year's Day of Prayer looks at Domestic Abuse which causes pain and fear that prevent its victims from living the life Jesus came to bring. This day invites us to pause as a Diocesan family to:
. Pray for all survivors and victims of domestic abuse
. Acknowledge the profound impact of abuse within families and relationships
. Commit ourselves anew to listening, safeguarding, and creating safe spaces in our Church communities

Domestic abuse can affect people of all ages, backgrounds, and circumstances. We recognise that this day may be especially challenging for some, and we encourage anyone who is affected to seek support. The Clifton Diocese Safeguarding Team is available to listen, offer support, and respond to safeguarding concerns with care, respect, and confidentiality.

A message from BristolAid4Ukraine following Sunday's lovely afternoon, learning this exquisite skill!

"Thank you to everyone who came along yesterday to our annual Pysanka workshop held by BristolAid4Ukrained4Ukraine at St Augustine's Church, Downend as part of the parish project event.
It was so special to come together and share the beautiful Ukrainian Easter tradition of wax egg decoration – Pysanky.
We hope you all enjoyed this calm, meditative process and had the chance to learn a little more about Ukrainian culture and heritage.
Together, we also raised an amazing £132 towards our new minibus 🚐 — thank you for your continued support!"
